Is it worth installing Adobe Reader update to 7.0.5?

J

JS

I can't find much information about exactly what is in Adobe's
update for Acrobat Reader/Pro 7.0.5. The only info I have found
is copied below.

These features are not very useful in my case and I don't want to
risk a jinxed installation by applying such a large update
unnecessarily.

Are there any other reasons to install this update such as
security or stability or bug fixes?

Thanks.

9.1 MB for the reader update? Ha Ha! You should consider dumping
Acrobat and getting Foxit instead. Small and fast, works great, and
only 1 MB for the install package.

Acrobat Reader 7.0.0 and higher pop up a false warning message every
time you exit the program unless you leave JavaScript enabled. I
don't think this is fixed yet in 7.0.5. I think JavaScript in PDFs is
unnecessary and potentially risky. There's a workaround at

Yep, go with foxit. It's quick and easy.

Sweet Andy

What happens if you already have adobe reader?

Lou
I already have Adobe 7.0; I located a pdf file and right clicked and
selected 'Open With', it gave me some selections, none of which was Foxit,
so I used the browse function to find it and also checked the 'always use
this program for these kinds of files' box.

pdf file always come up with Foxit now. You don't need to uninstall Adobe or
anything.

Enjoy

Oh, btw I have XP Pro, but all Windows should have something similar to the
scenario above.

Thanks for the ref. to foxit. Outstanding.

How does one use it as a plugin for FF?

Thanks,
Paul

Foxit is a standalone program; it doesn't register itself anywhere,
unless you tell it to. You can open the program and then use the
menus/buttons to open a PDF, and test the functions, without changing
your default viewer (the one that opens with a double click in a PDF
file). Then, if you like it, you can use it as your default viewer,
without uninstalling AcroRead, as someone else already pointed out.

Can you say "Bulk-ware."
I agree Foxit is alot better and smaller in file size.
However a lot of programs I have run into want only adobe to read its
pdf.
I only use Foxit .

Just say "No-Bulk-ware!."

I agree. And they're just bloat if you ask me.

See my final remark.

Already exists in earlier version.
Hebrew, Arabic, Thai, and Vietnamese language text entry & display

None of which I, at least, speak. Do you?
the Typewriter tool, the existing Text Box tool with a different

without interactive form fields.

This pretty much is already the case.

1. Upgrades to Acrobat Reader quit working in Windows versions older
than XP starting with the version after AR 6.

2. The problem with Adobe is that each new version of any program that
they have runs noticeably slower than the previous version. Not only
that, but often files produced by their programs in a newer version are
larger in size than those produced by an earlier version. In both these
regards, Adobe is no different than Microsoft and both are feeding the
Wintel consortium's agenda.

Freeware solutions like other PDF readers mentioned in this thread are a
much better solution.
