Is it true about NTFS

I was wondering about changing my NTFS hard disk with XP on it back to ME
Fat32. I understood in "KB314052" (Knowledge base article) under the heading
"removing NTFS", that you could successfully change from NTFS to Fat32. I did
this but everytime I do it (follow the instructions) it remains NTFS. I did
some more checking and I found that another article about changing from Fat32
to NTFS said that "changing from XP to Windows 98 or ME was impossible". Now
which is true, because I want to go back to ME? Is microsoft lying in the
first article or the second?

There are two ways to go back to FAT32 from NTFS:

1. Clean install
2. Third party software, like Partition Magic

However, NTFS is superior to FAT32 in several important aspects, not the
least of which is strengthened security.

While some say NTFS is superior for reasons mentioned others want to use
FAT32 because they need to be compatible with earlier versions of Windows
and/or DOS. Keep that in mind when commenting.

Actually Music Man said " because I want to go back to ME". You both seem to
have not noticed this comment.

The decision you need to make is whether you want Windows ME or Windows XP.
The KB Article you quote describes the steps to be taken including how to
reformat as FAT32. However be aware that if you have only one hard drive and
a single partition on that drive you will have to:

1. Backup all data files you wish to retain to CD or other media, including
all favourites and address books etc unless you intend to start afresh
without them.
2. Reinstall hardware and related device drivers.
3. Reinstall all programmes and updates, if still available.
4. Reset and customise system and programme settings to suit your needs.
5. And more.

You are heading for a load of hassle. Why are you contemplating reverting to
Windows ME? You are going back to an unsupported operating system with a
limited remaining useful life.
