Is it possible to set A4 paper as default in Excel?

In Excel, is there a way to set default paper to A4 without having to create
a template? In other words, can the default workbook or worksheet templates
be modified to use A4 as the paper size of choice?

Yes: FILE > PAGE SETUP > PAPER SIZE.

I'd create a template named book.xlt and keep it in my XLStart folder.

Set up all the options you want (including print layout for each worksheet).

Then all new workbooks will inherit these settings.

If you create another template named sheet.xlt (one sheet??) and save it into
your XLStart folder, then any new worksheet added to an existing workbook will
inherit those settings.

(What's the problem with creating a template?)
