is it possible to find a lost document?

I accidentally closed a word document without saving it? I don't know that
much about computers, and I was wondering if there was a way to recover lost
items on the computer or if they are just gone for good? I use Microsoft
Office Word 2003 and I have XP.
 
If you didn't save it there's nothing to recover.
