Is it possible to create your own symbols in Word?

I would like to be able to create a symbol that places carats (^) directly
above an ordinal number, something like ^1, except that the carat would be
directly above the number. This is a symbol frequently used in music theory,
denoting scale degree.

suggest using a circumflex accent, however, rather than a carat. You may be
able to use the "combining diacritic" at 02C6.
