is it me or are Maxtors total crap?

What do you guys think of this? If I leave the side panel off, there will
be less heat build up allowing me to disable a fan and cut down in noise.

Firstly, I expect the difference will be more than made up by allowing the
noise to escape with no resistance, particularly hard drive (idle, rotation)
noise. Secondly, you may find (as I have in the past) that removing the side
panel is actually worse in terms of temperatures for everything except the
PSU. Finally, as pointed out elsewhere, you lose control over dust getting
into the machine.
