My operating system is windows 98 se, i would like to
purchase the Excel spread-sheet application. Excel
requires windows 2000 + service pak 2 or higher operating
system. A friend said that windows XP includes the Excel
spread-sheet app.

Question: Does the windows XP, includes the Excel spread-
sheet app.

No, it doesn't nor did any other version of Windows. You can
purchase Excel separately or as part of MS Office. However, there are
several very good alternatives which are free:

Open Office = www.openoffice.org

602 Office = http://www.software602.com/products/pcs/

602 Office requires that you register it, but registration is free.

Your friend is wrong.
Neither Windows XP, nor any other version of Windows, has ever
included Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, or any other
significant application software. Such programs have to be
bought, either by themselves or as part of Microsoft Office.

Neither the Microsoft Office application suite, nor any of its
individual component applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint,
Access,Outlook, etc.), have _ever_ been "part" of *any* Windows
operating system. They are, and always have been, separate
applications, that must be purchased and installed separately.
