Is Excel Really Limited To 64MB Total Workbook Space?

I am trying to expand the amount of detail in an analysis I am doing. It
seems I am bumping my head on an upper limit of RAM memory that Excel can
access.

I read the Excel specs which state that while a worksheet is limited in size
a workbook is limited only by system resources. If so, and if all my
worksheets are within the stated limits, I should be able to have a workbook
up to say 750 MB in size, no?

What am I doing wrong? It gives me a memory error if I try to go above
about 64 MB.
