It's time I started to think about upgrading my hardware
and don't want to get a version of xp which will be
superseeded quickly.

It seem to me that it has now been around long enough
to be stable and that a version incorporating the
various service packs is warrented.

Thus, is one coming or are there rumours?

Thanks

Peter Gordon

There is no "XP Second Edition", and based on previous
releases, I doubt there will be. NT-based versions (XP
is NT 5.1) just use Service Packs.

Most if not all copies of XP you purchase from retailers
now have Service Pack 1 already built-in.

There has been only one service pack released. Most of the CDs
you find for sale will include it.

There has been no rumor of anything called a "second edition"
that I've heard.

You can pick-up XP versions with Service Pack 1 included these days. For the
Service Pack schedule, see:

Thanks for the replies.

BTW, I haven't heard any rumours or otherwise
of a Second Edition, and don't wish to start
any.

Is there any way of knowing if the version
has Service Pak 1 incorporated?

Peter, if you are talking about purchasing XP, there is no way to tell just
by looking at the package. It is not marked on the outside of the package. I
suggest you purchase it from a larger chain store, where they have rapid
turnover of XP. SP1 has been out long enough that a new purchase of XP will
almost certainly include it.

If you want to know whether your computer has SP1
RUN

I have an alpha version of the next Windows. Due out in about autumn 2005.
Rumour has it it will be called XP Secod Edition. It will be XP with more
eye candy and service packs pre-installed.

The successor to XP is a product that is in early stages of development
and won't be around until sometime like 2005. There will be a further
service pack of XP as an interim - probably next summer, but that will
be something you could download or get on a cheap CD. So if you are
thinking of new hardware, now, and using XP, is quite a good time.
Bearing in mind the way new systems tend to ask for yet more hardware,
you should go for a reasonably but not excessively upper end XP machine
- 512MB RAM (if they offer that they will offer enough of other things
too, like 2.5GHz plus CPU, 80 GB plus Hard disk). THen on a reasonable
guess you would be well placed for an upgrade of software when it comes
along
