Is a DVD "burner" even necessary now days?

I'm wondering if a recordable optical drive is even
worth messing with now days? Maybe just a reader
drive only? Or is the price diff between the two so
small as to be a no brainer for the burner?

Or.... with huge thumb drives and USB drives..... is
ANY optical drive worth messing with on a new build?

I cant even remember the last time I have burnt a DVD
or CD!

The price difference is negligble. In fact, at some places seeing a
DVDROM drive for sale is a rarety.

Wow, seriously, good question.

For myself it's a no brainer. I use a camcorder and want to make movies to
share with others. I want a backup of my software programs or DVD movies in
case the orginal gets unusable or lost. I download public domain movies and
want to burn them to DVD for viewing on a laptop. I download an ISO of the
newest Linux Ubuntu to try on a spare computer. I'd say it's still a ways
off before the burner burns out its welcome.

Yes, it is. Throwback to floppies, a RW or Write only, either way
takes a little more preparation. If you build with any amount of
software, USB flashdrives are still too new for that aspect. About to
the point where it would be hard to find a MB without an optical
provision to boot in the BIOS, anyway.

Ever have static wipe out your thumb drive? DVD's provide a solid media
for backups that last a long time.
