Is a 10 minute reboot normal?

Hate to say this, but is probably user caused by software
installations/deinstalls either not meant for XP, flaky software, internet
trash and so forth. The quickest fix in this case is to wipe the XP
partition and do a clean install.

Though that's not strictly necessary: I would still try what I posted

Check the hard drive with software provided by the hard drive's
manufacturer first. Preferrably, from boot media, not in XP environment
that may compound the problem symptoms. Such software needs exclusive
control to give proper results.

Those usually do a usually more thorough job at the same thing
chkdsk's "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" option. I would
try that first, since that option will wait until you reboot to check the
disk for errors. When you reboot, it will run chkdsk and scan for bad
blocks before the disk gets mounted. It will take a *lot* longer than
normal to start up: As long as the hard drive light is on, it's not
frozen...go grab your S/O and go for dinner and a movie while you reboot.
Odds are you won't need Windows for a while once you get back, but hey, if
you strike out, at least Windows will be done checking the disk and
booting...
