IRR - selecting cells

This novice would appreciate any help on this one problem.

What is the syntax to select cells for the IRR function that are not located
on the same horizontal or vertical line? In other words, the data I want to
enter into the IRR function is located in variuos random cells on my spread
sheet.

If there is an answer, will that work for the NPV function as well?
