Why? Each to their own of course but I think it's one of those must have

Mabbett the troll is putting words in my mouth. To the best of my
memory I've never directly said that Irfanview isn't freeware, or even
implied that it isn't. Regardless, if it isn't freeware, that doesn't
mean that discussion of it is off topic in this group. It's a program
that I myself use extensively.

And that is the main criterion? SCNR, but it really looks that way if
you write it like this.

I would define it as Freeware under certain conditions, in this case,
private use. There are so many "partly freeware" out there; if we are
going the purist way, we will soon leave out quite a number of good
programs.

BTW:
There are obviously several levels of "freeware", like freeware for
private use, donationware, postcardware, adware (under certain
circumstances, Opera isn't too obtrusive); and I would propose to set
the limit about there when the "free" ware becomes spyware (gatorized or
whatever).

And yes, I say that the Gator system is a spyware suite. I have the
right to say my opinion, based on Article 5, Paragraph 2 of our basic
law (Grundgesetz), and Gator can't do anything about it.

Yes, you have.

Pardon?

It's a program that I myself use extensively.

So what?

Against a pigeon toed pea-brain and his intellectual lightweight

I've been following the group on and off for ages and I've yet to see why
some have anything against him. What's the problem? Is it because he has
strong views on what is and isn't freeware? I read most of his latest post
and disagreed with a lot of it but so what, he is entitled to his opinion.

It's because he has an opinion, George. The trolls look for anyone in any
group that has an outspoken opinion for their target. They stir shit by
using words such as "net cop", "faq-nazi", etc. Others come to the
targets aid and the thread grows and grows. Sooner or later the group gets
fractured and the trolls have won. You know who they are. Best to use
kill filters to keep from becoming part of the problem. Anyone who replies
to a troll has just painted a big target on their forehead. Use a
newsreader that supports regular expression kill filters so you can be
blissfully ignorant of troll-spew.

I've just painted a target on *my* forehead...........trolling won't work
with me cause I won't see and/or read/reply. Watch as the trolls try to
continue this thread to infinity ................ Don't help them.

John Corliss should also take some responsibility for that, if this is
what really happens. His inability to resist being trolled and just
killfile is exactly what trolls thrive upon as many posters have
recently being pointing out.

Well the problem with kill files is that for various reasons, posters
might change their email or user name for many legimate reasons (i.e
avoid being spammed), and then he posts out again :)

I think he can take care of himself against braindead trolls and, for
that matter, against fools like you as well.

But "which" definition of non freeware ? Certainly NOT John C's This
group isn't the same as it was several years ago when the so called
vote was taken and most now would see a vote as ... (insert your own
words here) and most of the people who voted have probably gone on to
better and greater things.

I don't have any problem with JC, or anyone else, objecting to any
freeware having a time limitation. This is a freeware group
after all. :)
