IrDA problems - please help

As the title says. I have been using a Canon printer with my laptop using a
cable. I have recently got a new laptop which only has USB ports which are
uncompatible with my printer cable. I have tried an adaptor which didn't work
as Canon said it probably wouldn't & they cannot supply a suitable cable. The
printer is apparantly enabled with IrDA. My laptop runs XP, do I need to
install / download anything to make these devices compatable.

Any help greatly appreciated

The first step is to look at the BIOS settings to make sure that the IR port
is enabled. Next, that the IR mode selected is compatable with the printer.
Beyond that, I have no information on either your laptop or the specific
model Canon printer, since you didn't include the details.
