I'm thinking of treating myself to a iPod this Christmas. One advert I
see says:

What is that Firewire interface please? Can these not be connected to
PC via USB.

Firewire is a different type of connection from USB, do a search on
firewire.

Look into Apple's iPod site online and you will see that
a USB 2.0 can also be used instead of the Firewire.

Thanks. Is USB a lot slower than Firewire? Also, to be frank I'm not
sure I know whether this PC uses USB 2.0 or USB 1.0. How can I tell
for sure?

What is that Firewire interface please? Can these not be connected to
PC via USB.

It is a competitor to USB. You can get a firewire card (AKA IEE1394)
you add to your system.

USB 2.0 is 280Mbits, while Firewall is 400Mbits.
