ipconfig /release error

I really wish these sort of error messages meant something...

Have had a couple of computers sitting in my office for several months,
one has a bad power supply, the other has a bad motherboard. Finally
got around to swapping the power supplies so that I've got one maching
that works. Anyway, it now powers up ok and seems to work. I've
plugged it into my cable modem and can't get an internet connection.
Have tried to a release-renew on the network adapter, but when I type
ipconfig /release, I get "The operation failed as no adapter is in the
state permissible for this operation." What does that mean exactly,
what should I do?

It could be winsock32 corruption issue. this link may help,

2) The operation failed since no adapter is in the state permissible for this
operation. 3) The attempted operation is not supported for the type of object ...

It may mean that you have no network adapter configured for DHCP. To
fix this the TCP/IP properties config should be set to "Obtain an IP
address automatically".

It also may mean that although your adapter is configured to obtain an
address automatically, it did not receive one from a DHCP server - instead
it has an APIPA address. Ipconfig /release will not work with an APIPA
address. Try disconnecting power to your cable modem for several minutes;
reconnect power; wait for the initialization to complete; then run ipconfig
/renew.
