When I enter "ipconfig" in the run command, the window opens up and then closes almost immediately.

Does anyone have any idea what is wrong?

I am trying to setup an ftp server on my pc and need to get IP addresses.

I have shutdown the software firewall and virus software thinking that may be the problem.

Regards

That's normal. Instead of using the Run command, click Start - All
Programs - Accessories - Command Prompt and type it at the prompt.

yes , thanx - that worked

found the same answer by reading further down in the posts (sheepish grin)

I have another question though - maybe you can advise me:

When I run ipconfig, I get a list of adresses but i am not sure which one is the address that is seen publicly

I am behind a router and think that the IP adress listed is the one people trying to access the ftp server need to enter in their client software but there is something called "connection specific DNS suffix" that is the address for comcast (my ISP).

There are a couple other DNS addresses, subnet mask and default gateway, and I don't have a clue what they are for.

Any ideas?

When you type ipconfig, the IP address given is the LAN IP. It probably
looks like 192.168.xx.xx
If you want the external WAP IP address, open IE and type in
www.whatismyip.com and it will show your public IP.
