IPconfig and router

I am installing a new (SMC) wireless router from a DSL
modem through a wire to an XP Pro system. I've confirmed
on another XP system that the router is okay. Hwoever, on
my intended system, the router cannot install itself,
giving an error that says gateway address doesn't match
etc. So I go to cmd and run ipconfig /release (this works)
but ipconfig /renew gives "an error occurred while
renewing the interface local area conncetion. The system
cannot find the file specified." In the MS KB (810606) the
suggestion is to stop any firewall (did that - no
difference) or reinstall XP and all upgrades (whew!).
Seems like an extreme solution. I'd like to know if anyone
has actually had to go through this and what happened or
if there is another test. A related KB is 822123 that
suggests some DHCP stuff (which does not seem to be the
problem). Thanks.

Can't be 100% sure, but it seems to me that there's a DHCP problem. ipconfig
/renew is trying to renew the lease. Before anything else, it tries to
locate the DHCP server and apparently fails. Check if the router LAN IP is
in the same subnet with the router's DHCP IP pool. The computers on your LAN
may not get an IP at all and self-configure with APIPA.

If still no good, repost with the details of your TCP/IP configuration and
the results of the ipconfig /all

Thanks - the DHCP was unassigned and the subnet would have
been okay if could be assigned - there was no
communication with the router to deal with at all. While I
was at it, I also installed the new MS program that
replaces TCPIP. I could not run NETSHR either so there was
no solution along that route suggested in the KB (it just
hung). So I bit the bullet and re-installed XP. It's
actually no work, just a lot of time. When it was done,
the router was accessible and there were no more errors. A
couple of changes happened along the way (Netbeui protocol
was disabled and a firewall in a non-used connection was
removed). Done and done.
