I've read many places about getting rid of the IPC$
password and tried many things, but i cant get them to
work. One of the suggestions was to make sure 'simple
file sharing' is enabled, but i dont know where that is to
check if its enabled. any help? thanks.
You don't say what you have tried.
However, there are not really many things to try.
The cause of this is perfectly well understood,
it's not a matter of guessing, and trying this and trying that.
The simple problem is that the machine you are trying to
connect to does not know who you are.
How to deal with this depends on whether or not you are using
Simple File Sharing on the target machine.
If Simple File Sharing is enabled, then all users attempting to
connect are accepted as 'Guest'.
Since you are struggling with this, then I'd reccomend you do use Simple
File Sharing,
since it means you don't need to mess with user accounts and Access Control
Lists.
If you have XP Pro, this option is selected in:
Windows Explorer ( NOT Internet Explorer );
Tools | Folder Options;
View tab;
Advanced Settings | Scroll to the bottom;
Check 'Use Simple File Sharing'.
If you have XP Home, then this option is not present:
It uses Simple File Sharing all the time.
So on the target machine, ensure SFS is enabled.
( On XP home, it will be. )
Also, ensure you have not disabled the guest account.
It is required for Simple File Sharing.
Go to a command prompt, and type:
net user guest /active:yes
Now, you ought to be able to browse the machine.
