I recently installed a program that required me to forward my NAT ports and
keep my IP address static. Once i did this i was unable to use MSN messanger.
I made the IP address automatic but MSN messanger still does not work.

PLEASE HELP

Kelly,

I could not find information regaurding this. Do I need to forward ports in
order to use MSN messenger?

What program did you use to forward your ports? Or did you do it on your
router?

You do port forwarding in your router's configuration settings.

I used internet explorer and typed in the IP address of the router and it
brought the router configuration up. The problem actually happend when I
entered the IP address into the TCP/IP properties section.

What IP address are you talking about. The (static) IP address of your
computer?? What ports did you forward??? to this address.

P.S. You have to realise that you did not explain exactly what you did.
Typically when people set-up port forwarding they tend to know what they are
doing. The talk of static IP address in such a circumstance would generally
refer to the Public IP address on the Internet side of the router (Internet
Service Provider would do this) whereas you appear? to have simply made the
(private) LAN side IP address static.

Whoa!!

Did you tell your router that it no longer needed to obtain a public
IP address from your broadband ISP? If so, that's your problem. Very
few broadband providers use static IPs; they are almost all on dynamic
IPs. You need to change your router to accept this dynamic IP.

All I did was input the IP address and such into the TCP/IP settings that i
go using c:\ipconfig /all
Then this is when my messenger stopped working. Once i realized this I put
the ip address to "automatic" and same with the DNS settings.

The error i get from MSN messenger is as follows:
"Sorry, we were unable to sign you in to the .NET Messenger Service at this
time. Please try again later. 8007f0d.

The other computers on my network do not have a problem with messenger.
