tcp/ip fix

Thank god, its been 24hrs since I last hand the net at home, and who knows
how long it could have gone on for?! I was uninstalling something and found
that I got an error about my windows sockets not working, this in short meant
NO INTERENT!

So what to do? I went to the library and got some info telling me to type
"netsh int ip reset logfile.txt" and a whole load of reg rubbish but still no
internet :(

Problem was the file i needed to fix it can not be downloaded using library
computers, security measure see, so I had to rely on a friend and his comp
was stuffed too (through old age). But another friend of mine was available
and I got 'WinXP IP Fix':

http://www.snapfiles.com/download/dlwinsockxpfix.html

It did the business; one click and a backup/reboot/fixed! yessss!!! My
question is why is this not built into windows. The help in XP was shit, i
really needed this and it wasn't built in!!!

I doubt it would be wise or possible to provide every possible repair tool
with WinXP. For one thing they would all require testing before release.

Thanks, but put it this way. I clicked that link you gave me, skimmed 1/3rd
down and was bored. This software was a small box with two buttons, one fixed
the problem and the other did something I don't much give a monkey about :)

There was this connection icon that popped up when I had trouble in the
systray, it said this and that, and there was a button to press and hopefully
fix things, but it didnt of course, said something about not being able to
determine the ip address or assign it?!?!?!? well this button should be
replaced with the one form WinXP IP fix and when i search in help for sockets
faliure I want a button to press that does the same thing, not reams of data.

I am not a Linux user, I pay for my software, and I expect convinience. So I
still recommend Win IP XP to be a click away or performed automatically
instead of telling me what to do. I be apple would know what to do....

Samuel

By using that software you will now get pop ups to visit
www.sexfind.com. I used it once and the pop up started and it became
extremely risky for kids to use the PC.

So I used MS Antispyware Beta 1 and it removed something but the pop up
was still there.

I did a complete reinstall and it solved the problem.

Never use any software given for free unless you know who is
distributing it and most importantly why!

I'm sorry but I don't know what you are talking about. My internet connection
works fine now, as it did before. I do not get any sex.com popups at all and
I completely trust the software.

I reccomend you try the software from the link i previously posted. Oh and
if you think I wanted to reinstall my PC, you must be mad. I did several
rolebacks, to no avail, so the virus obviously bypassed that.

That's why the "Winsockxpfix" type utilities came into "being." Microsoft did
not expect anyone to repair IP. They wanted you to re-install XP when you
have this type of problem. These utilities saved my butt ( client PCs)
several times.

An alternate is LSP Fix
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

The situation is that you had a program, malware or legitimate, that iserted intself as a
Plug-In to the Lasyered Service Provider (LSP).
One that software was removed the LSP stack was not fixed and thus the TCP/IP stack would
not operate properly.

The native commands in WinXP SP2 are...
netsh winsock reset
netsh winsock reset catalog

ANONYMOUS doesn't know either. He/she is making a faux and coincidental conclusion.

Well they had better get their act together because that's BS. Now I'm a
microsoftie, fine but Ive already changed my browser to FF and am not looking
back, too many extensions to let go of. I have been tinkering with Winamp too.

If MS cant see the idiocy of this decision then why should I stay with them,
that's makes me stupid.

Yes, fine. But that is not what I am talking about. 'Native commands' what
does that mean to the average joe. I did get notified that my internet was
done in, but the button used to fix it did not work. The program I downloaded
did, substitution is the only way.

Native commands -- Built into the OS and not requiring third party software.

I know that, but many do not. Most understand what a button which says 'fix'
will do so why not make WinXP IP Fix native instead. Like I said, this is not
a Linux OS.

It would be really nice to a Fix button on my car as well.

Ok this is as far as this thread his going to go, good as its been I wonder
....will Microsoft do the right thing and design a similar tool and include it
or just keep the status quo which is no use at all.

Hell, most newbies Today don't understand simple DOS type commands; DEL, TYPE, DIR, COPY,
DATE, FIND, ATTRIB, etc, etc.

How many buy an automobile but can't put on new break pads ?

I was trying to point out that when something breaks you need tools to fix
it. This applies to computers as well as cars or anything else. I agree the
corrupted winsock problem is becoming more prevalent due to malware. It may
be a good idea for Microsoft to provide a fix other than a via a command
prompt. You could even argue that if Microsoft had designed better security
into Windows the problem wouldn't exist. My point was that was expecting a
free, easy to use tool to fix something that is broken partly through your
own actions is unrealistic. At present there are no self healing OS's that I
know of. There is always something that will break and need a tool to be
fixed.

Kerry

Well you see this is where you are plain wrong. A tool is available, it is
located on the window which tells you the problem (that small connection
speed icon in the systray). Problem is the 'fix' button does not work. It
should therfore be replaced with WinXP IP ix -- simple as that.

Samuel, UK

Let's agree to disagree. The problem you experienced went deeper than that
one symptom you point out. Better error messages would be a help but I still
think you are being unrealistic to expect a built in fix for every problem
that crops up.

Kerry

No, I cannot agree to those terms. You know its the kind of mentality that
you have which makes it easier for companies like apple to make their product
more attractive.

All anyone wants, if they run into a problem, is to have it fixed
immediately. Like system restore...often it can roll back time ans voilla, or
roll back a driver and its all better. My point was that the option to fix
the IP address did not work, the tool I had seemed to do everything, backup
the data fixed it (by resetting everything back to factory standards (as it
should be)) and then letting me get one.

This is what should be in placement, the fix button in XP did not work and I
needed it to. The fix I found is an all purpose and would be welcomed by
anybody. SImple as that!

All it has to do is just work.
