Invisible pictures in Word 2003

When I use the 'Insert Picture' command to place a photo (jpg) in my
document, it is invisible unless I switch to 'read' view or print preview,
where I cannot edit it. I have followed suggestions to change field codes
without any success, so think the problem must lie elsewhere. Any suggestions?
