Invisible ODBC DSN

J

Jeff Mowatt

I've been attempting to create ODBC system dsn's by editing the
odbc.ini file plus the ODBC.INI and ODBC Data Sources within my HKLM
registry section.

The ODBC is functioning but will not show in the list of DSN neither
will any other I create via odbc itself.

Have I missed something or could this be corruption?

TIA

Sorry Dave, I didn't see it before. Thought my message didn't post.

What did you mean by "get the subkey"? I'm storing the values in
hklm\software\ODBC\ODBC.INI and ODBC Data Sources as I and the
structures look the same as a system dsn created via the control
panel.

Jeff

Importing the relevant info from these keys works for me.

HKLM\SOFTWARE\ODBC\ODBC.INI\ODBC Data Sources

Dave,

Yes, originally I obtained these values from the registry and then
deleted the ODBC dsn so that I could test the re-creation.
I must have made an error which corrupted my ODBC in some way and now
any DSN that I create is invisible.
What I need to do I guess is find a way to re-install ODBC, I tried
installing MDAC 2.5v3 but W2K blocks me, telling me it's already
installed.
Having now fixed my registry update program (Wise install)I'm
confident that I can now update the registry cleanly. But first I need
to bring ODBC back to a good state, All the entries look perfectly OK
in the registry but there is still some kind of corruption and I can't
find out where to go to fix it.

Jeff Mowatt

Dave,

An update on this. I discovered that by deleting all system DSN's from
my registry, I can now re-create them cleanly via ODBC. My script
still fails to produce a visible entry but at least I know how to
recover from the corruption.

Dave,

You are right. I had an error in my ODBC Data Sources key and that
seemed to making any valid DSN I created subsequently, invisible.
