Just bought a IBM T40 laptop (comes with xp pro) and want to clean install the os. I borrowed a xp pro cd from my friend but it said my product key was incorrect during installation. Could someone help? How can I do a clean install on this new laptop using the product key sticked to the bottom of it?

Use the disk/partition that was provided you by the vender to do an install.
The key should work then. If not, contact the vender.

It appears that you are trying to use an O.E.M. key with a retail version
CD. It likely will not work.

Hi,

I would recommend that you not do this. The retail version may not contain
needed drivers for your laptop. You should stick with the version of WinXP
that came with the system. As you have discovered, the OEM Product Key will
not work with a retail version, as it is not licensed for it.

That goes with the setup of the specific CD (or other means, such as a
hidden partition) that came with the machine as the means of restoring
it to ex-factory state. IT can't be used with CDs of a different
variant

IBM has very specific information how to reinstall Windows. Press the
blue IBM Access button on your laptop as you boot up.

Greetings --

What installation CD(s) are you using? You do need to be using
the original OEM installation CDs that came with the computer.
Product Keys are bound to the specific type and language of CD/license
(OEM, Volume, retail, full, or Upgrade) with which they are purchased.
For example, a WinXP Home OEM Product Key won't work for any retail
version of WinXP Home, or for any version of WinXP Pro, and vice
versa. An upgrade's Product Key cannot be used with a full version
CD, and vice versa. An OEM Product Key will not work to install a
retail product. An Italian Product Key will not work with an English
CD.

Bottom line: Product Keys and CDs cannot be mixed & matched.

Ok I understand now. I think I'll stick to the original os that came with the laptop to get rid of all the hassles. Thanks for all that replied.
