Since retiring an old server, may user Word 2000 documents take minutes to
open rather than seconds. After poking about within the slow files, I found
a reference to the old server in Tools > Templates and Add-Ins, in the
Document template box. Deleteing the box contents and saving the file fixes
the problem; file opens nice and fast after that. But opening each and every
file to fix will take hours and hours (lots of users and files). I noticed
that after deleting the bad reference and saving, Normal appears in the box.
Is there a fast way to replace the offending reference with Normal? Is there
a way to turn off saving the template used to create new documents?
Thanks for the help!

Unfortunately this has been an issue for some time and a patch has
been created for later versions of Word but since you are using Word
2000 you can use the following:

Use the macro is the Workaround section at the end of this article (It
will work in Word 2000):
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q823372

Also, to help speed up the macro another suggestion is to temporarily
recreate the server. The template do not need to be placed on the
server since the delay you are encountering is Word searching for the
server. If Word can find the server then the macro should loop through
the files fairly quickly and make the necessary change.

Hi Beth,

Could you tell me where I would find the patch for this problem?? I am using
Microsoft Office Word 2003

Many thanks

Hello Beth,

The problem with the attached template that points to a non-existing server
is a wide spread phenomenae. Will Microsoft PLEASE post a script somewhere
(not the workaround KB823372 or 830561) that runs FAST thru an entire
directory with subdirectories and changes the atttached template to
normal.dot. There are people out here that have thousands of documents,
spread over hundreds of directories. MS can't be serious in believeing that
someone will even consider running the script provided on each of these
directories.
Just a plain click-and run script that plows thru everything and fixxes it
no questions asked. PLEASE???
