Hello,

I am having some problems copying AVI files from a CD on
my laptop. I receive Invalid MS-DOS Function error
messages.
I'm using Windows XP and Media Player 8.

Does anybody know how to solve this?

Thanks

Hi,

This behavior can occur if the .avi was created by using a
codec that was not installed on the host computer and the
codec is not available on an update site. this behavior
can also occur because the file encoding for the .avi file
is unsupported.

Microsoft does not support playing .avi files that were
created by using the MPEG4 version 3 codec.

Hi Raj,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

Do you know of anything I can download to solve this?

Thanks

Are you sure this is the problem? Why would the OS care what codec
the file is encoded in when copying it from the CD drive to another
location? I could understand this response if the OP was trying to
play the file - but they are just trying to copy it.

When copying the file, the OS just sees files that need to be moved
from point a to point b. Codecs shouldn't matter!

Exactly.
Not sure why you would be gettinga n MS-DOS error especially since there is
no MS-DOS with Windows XP.
I suggest you drag the files from the CD to the HDD using Windows Explorer.

Do you have the specific error mesasges?

Does it happen with all the files, just some, some over a specific size?

Are there other (non-AVI) files on the CD you can or can't copy?

At the moment it just happens with AVI's. I try to copy
them to my hard drive - it seems to work then half way
through copying the file the copy time increases to
25/45/90 minutes left. Then the error message appears. I'm
not sure if it has got anything to do with the way the CD
was burnt or not?

Thanks

I can only presume he is trying to do it with something like XCOPY in a
'DOS', command prompt, window and does not have the CD support items
enable in autoexec.nt

That would be my guess as well but you still wouldn't get an invalid MS-DOS
function error would ya? Since it isn't actually MS-DOS.

I got smarts too :)
