hi

a friend of mine has xp on his pc, and every time he tries to access the internet, he gets an error message (error written off centre in a small box). it is impossible to get a browser page up, but emails on outlook express are downloadable, so the actual connection is sound....is it a virus? norton isnt picking anything up.

any ideas?

Greetings,

May you provide us with the exact error message pls. Also have a look at my
guide on how to remove spyware on your system:
http://users.onvol.net/118226-2/xpez/articles/remove_spyware.html

Try these programs to check for any spyware that may be on your system:

Ad-Aware - www.lavasoftusa.com
Spybot - http://www.safer-networking.org/
CWShredder - http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

Try SpyWareBlaster to stop intrusions:

Also see the following links:

Thanks and best of luck!

the error message is purely the word "error" written off centre in a small box with an x in the top corner to close the box and the browser page

One thing to try is another browser. Of course you're going to have to
bring one over on CD or guess what, if you dont have a burner this one
fits on a 1.44 floppy disk and doesn't require an install. The trick is
to see if it's an internet problem or a IE problem for starters.
