Internet Tmp files & index.dat

R

RoseW

I couldn't find a group in which to ask an IExplorer question so posting it
here. The IE tmp files are not emptying out as requested in the Advanced
selection.
I have the setting to allow all hidden files to be shown and the Content 1e5
+Temp subfolders and index.dat file are not listed in that IE temp folder so
all IE temp files are there in the main temp folder.
I fear that as a result of installing and using a software called 'Exposed'
whose purpose is to scan for all Internet images left behind these IE
content and sub folders and index.dat file have been deleted.
I used the Cleanup utility last night and there were the numbered folders
and the index.dat file but I cannot see them when I look in the Temp folder
in my Owner folder.
Is there a procedure to correct the fact the temp files are not clearing out
when the browser is shut down?

RoseW;
Open Internet Explorer/Tools/Internet Options/General tab/click Delete
Cookies/Click Delete Files/click Clear History. When the Delete Files
window pos up, check Delete all online content, if you so desire.
Unless you have some reason for keeping any of this. Some sites use Cookies to
save your name, password, etc. so you don't have to type the information
every time you visit. I would rather type it in than have all that junk
cluttering up my hard drive.
If you want, try this: Open IE/Tools/Internet Options/Advanced
tab/scroll down to the bottom/check: Empty Temporary Internet Files
folder when browser is closed/click Apply/OK. Entirely up to you,
but if you want to be rid of this, it is done automatically.
Also: Start IE/Tools/Internet Options/General tab/Days to keep
pages in history: 0 (ZERO) /Apply/OK.

And, if you're compelledton delete the index.dat file, you can do it
from Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

Wesley: re: C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Local
Settings\Temporary InternetFiles\Content.IE5
The folder and subfolders that I thought might have been deleted are located
in the above directory.

The temp files that are in C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local
Settings\Temporary InternetFiles. which is mine( although it is called USER
on a one user machine) has a few cookies I do keep and a decorative list of
favicons???? What use are favicons?

I guess I expected the IE temp storage folder to be completely empty so it
was a surprise to see these items but I thought an index.dat file would be
in the folder. I guess its enough that it is in the Windows system32 folder.

I read about configuring the PageFile in the registry then when the
computer shuts down no temp files are retained
HKLM\System\Currentcontrolset\Control\SessionManager\MemoryManagement
clearpgefileshutdown =1

Rose;
"What use are favicons?" In IE on your Favorites list, the Favicons are
just neater looking that the default page with the IE "e". Purely a matter of
user preference.
As Ddweddyodd suggested, "And, if you're compelled to delete the index.dat
file, you can do it
from Safe Mode with Command Prompt."
I had to do this last night. One Index.dat file was so big Notepad would
not open it. Only WordPad would. So I booted into the Safe Mode, did a Search
for all SEVEN Index.dat files and deleted them all. Windows just recreates
them. They are either 16KB or 32 KB.
My C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Local Settings\Temporary
InternetFiles\Content.IE5\Index.dat was huge. I don't remember how big.
######
Clear IE History, AutoComplete, Clear the TIF, Clear the RunMRU, Typed URL's
and Clear List (depending on which Start Menu you are using): Right click the
Start button
/Properties/Customize/Advanced/Recent Documents/Clear List.
######
HKLM\System\Currentcontrolset\Control\SessionManager\MemoryManagement
clearpgefileshutdown =1
With this value set to =1, you are probably experiencing really slow
shutdowns. I changed mine to
=0 and my shutdown time decreased to beat the band. ;o)
######
The Page File and temp files are not related.
In storage, a pagefile is a reserved portion of a hard disk that is used as
an extension of random access memory (RAM) for data in RAM that hasn't been used
recently. A pagefile can be read from the hard disk as one contiguous chunk of
data and thus faster than re-reading data from many different original
locations. Windows NT administrators or users can reset the system-provided
default size value of the pagefile to meet their particular needs.
In other operating systems, the pagefile is called a swap file or a swap
partition.
