Time I get the messgae:
"An error occured while Windows was synchronizing with
time.windows.com" cab anyone offer an explanation & fix?

Try this:
1.Start->Run cmd.exe
2. net stop w32time
3. w32tm.exe /unregister
4. w32tm.exe /register
5. net start w32time

Ignore errors, continue with the steps.

Time need ports 123 UDP and 13 UDP open on FW.
Your firewall must not block protocol NTP.

I got what might have been the same message, but there was more to the
error message than you showed, something about having different levels,
but I can't find what was now. Probably another overlooked permission
problem.

I can't, but I do have a link to a program that will sync your clock.
ftp://ftp.atomtime.com/atpro31c.exe

Yes; IO get the same result.

I'm getting the same error:

"An error occurred while Windows was synchronizing with time.windows.com.
The time sample was rejected because: The peer's stratum is less than the
host's stratum."

Just another cryptic error message from M$ that gives no clue to a fix. A
Google search didn't help much.

I get the same thing on 3 PC's after SP2.

1. Why do I have to this it's obvious it's an SP 2 Problem? I gotta believe
that evryone is having this problem. No?

2. How do I do this?

I think Will Denny had a post that referred to that as being a HOST Linux
date command problem (using old format of a date command)?

UPDTE vs. UPDT???

It's somewhere in here?

It has to be your firewall.

I have been using sp2 for two months and I think this problem just started
(for me). I use a program that synchronizes time every day.

First synchronizing worked normally and then last week it failed. I changed
from a navy server to time.nist.gov and it worked until yesterday. Then I
entered time-b.nist.gov because -a did not work. -b worked but this morning
I got the error message again. I entered time-nw.nist.gov and it worked
several times today. I will see if it still works tomorrow. By the way,
the error message for time.windows.com is different than the other sources.
It says that the time difference is too great.

I use winxp for synchronizing to a time server; not a separate program. I
did use Internet Time by Doug Knox to set the update interval to 24 hours.
At present, I can use the manual update button to synchronize time but the
automatic update does not function. I get several different errors messages
that depends on the time server. The auto update stopped functioning in the
last week or so. It might be related to the latest ie6 update, KB834707,
which was installed on 10/14/04.

tick.usno.navy.mil was the server that I was using when it first failed.

This morning, I removed the autoupdate check and Internet Time 1.1. then I
rebooted. Then I downloaded Internet Time 1.2, checked the autoupdate, and
rebooted. Set Internet Time for 1 hr updates, rebooted, and let it update.
So far, there have been 2 successful autoupdates with time.nist.gov. I will
see how this goes.

I do not know if it is what I did, if all the time servers got well, or if
it is the phase of the moon but all of the time servers (5) that were giving
me errors now work. I will go back to sleep and not complain unless the
daylight savings time fiasco repeats.

Hi, after not finding any help on this issue, and I had the exact same one,
Google found a cached copy of an old post on
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general. Worked perfectly for me.
-------------------------------------------
Try unregistering and re-registering the Time service; this may well do
the trick.

1. Start->Run cmd.exe
2. net stop w32time
3. w32tm.exe /unregister
4. w32tm.exe /register
5. net start w32time

(note spellings w32tm and w32time in different commands)
