Internet statistics under WinXP

T

Tal Fuchs

I recently moved to WinXP and installed a router to connect 2 PCs to an ADSL
modem.
(Before they had Win98 and where connected with Cross-Linked cable and Win
ICS)
Now I have 2 connection icons in the notification erea - one for the Local
network and the other for the Internet connection.
The one for the Internet Connection actually shows the speed connection from
the router to the Modem (10.0 Mbps), and not the Internet connection speed.
It also shows only the recevied packets.
Is there any way to see the TRUE internet connection speed and statistics
for this connection?

Thanks,
Tal

Samuria,
Thanks for the reply
TaskManager won't help here cause it will show only the NIC information and
not the ADSL information.
I have NetPerSec. It is free and very good monitoring utility, but still
only for the NIC.

Router to the modem? - how do you mean, generally the router is the modem -
are you refering to these two connections on the client machines or some
kind of server you are running (and refer to as your router).

Im a tad confused, usually the only way you would have two connections
showing would be if you say had a dial up connection as well as being
connected to a network.

Are you saying that you have two NIC's in your PC or are both PC's networked
via the router or all three plugged into a switch or hub.

Either way i'm assuming you can access the router using your browser and its
ip address (or indeed your external ip in some cases) and a username (e.g.
admin) and a password (that you probably setup when you put all the settings
in).- this browser thing should also give you information about the current
state of the connection, is this not what your after. I'm not sure any of it
is particualry meaningful and can't say its something I bother checking too
often but I can see why you may want to test your connection to check your
getting what you pay for - have you therefore tried the speed checkers on
ADSL Guide.

Sam,
Thanks fr the reply.

I have 2 PCs connected to the router (D-Link DI-604). This router has no
internal modem. It has 10MB WAN port to connect to external modem. The modem
(B-Focus 270 router)connected to the WAN port, and working as a modem only.
I have no problem getting into the D-Link router using it's IP address
(192.168.0.1) but I can't get into the B-Focus modem (+ Router) using it's
IP address (192.168.0.1)
I hope this clarify my connections.
What I realy want to check is the connection speed on ADSL line - From the
B-Focus modem (+Router) to the phone line.
I also would like to have monitoring this line. Monitoring the WAN line of
the D-Link router would be the same.

Thanks,
Tal

Makes sense - there is only one 192.168.0.1 there, and you are talking
to it. Just as the router screens your LAN from The World, so it also
screens your ADSL modem from you :)

IOW, the modem is abstracted from you by the router, so I can't see
how you'd be able to query its status directly. 192.168.0.1 will get
the router, as you mention, and the router's WAN address will pass
through the router and ADSL modem and reach the ISP gateway.

Looks like you can't get there from here - the destination you seek is
indeed on the railway line you are riding but there's no station there

Only way I can think of is to connect to the modem directly (i.e. take
the router out from in between - not good securitywise if connected,
safe if not connected but then you can't read connect status)

Can the router ask "for you"? Does the ISP hold stats? Does it help
to use a "measure the speed of this download" site? how about Ping to
your ISP's gateway? All pale substitutes, I know.
I also would like to have monitoring this line. Monitoring the WAN line of
the D-Link router would be the same.

cquirke (MVP Win9x),
Thanks for the reply.
The painting you did is correct !!!
The ADSL modem address is 192.168.1.1 (Not 192.168.0.1 as I wrote, by
mistake). Is it makes any difference ?
So, what you actualy say is that I can't see the modem as part of the home
network (Make sance), am I right ?
So heres come my next Q: How does I get the icon for the internet connection
? Does it show the WAN line from Router to Modem ? If it does how can I
monitor this line ?
And another Q: I get the information in packets. Can I see it in Bytes ?

Thanks,
Tal

It does if router's address is 192.168.0.1 rather than 192.168.1.1 too
So, what you actualy say is that I can't see the modem as part of the home

Yes, if router and ADSL have same IP. Well, they wouldn't have the
same IP; the ADSL would have no IP of its own and would be connected
directly to the router so they are seen as one unit by TCP/IP

If OTOH each has it's own (different) IP address, then you can "talk"
and "see" each separately.
So heres come my next Q: How do I get the icon for the internet connection?
Dunno...

Does it show the WAN line from Router to Modem ? If it does how can I
monitor this line ?

Dunno... need clarity on how ADSL device connects to router; LAN cable
or other direct non-networking connection?
And another Q: I get the information in packets. Can I see it in Bytes ?

If you know the packet size and if that is a constant, then it's an
arithmetic thing; dunno if that can be automated.
