Internet Shortcut Icons

When adding links to the "Favorites" list, many websites
will include a shortcut icon which goes along with the
descriptive title of the link.

I enjoy the nice touch these icons give to the list as
they make finding the correct link a little quicker.

I notice that these icons sometimes (eventually) end up
disappearing. Why is this? What function causes them to
be purged?

Also, I'd like to know if there is a quick way to get
them all back....rather than revisiting all the websites
again and creating new links.
