Internet Sharing

I am using a router! I am capable of file sharing. I see the other computers
on the network that goes through a router. The cable modem is attached to
the 3com Nic on my computer that is the host. I have two nics on my
computer. The Broadcom Nic is attached to the router. I am the Host. I am
running XP home and have plenty of space and memory on my computer.

I get an error message every time I try to reactivate Internet sharing on my
computer

An error occurred while Internet sharing was being enabled. Yhe Service
cannot accept control messages at this time.

Any help would be appreciated.

My daughter has two nics that are working and are connected to the router.
Her computer is running XP Pro. She is the client computer. Her internet
sharing is enabled.

If you have a router attached to your cable modem and you and your daughters
computers plugged into the router what do you want to use the 2nd nic cards
for?

Assuming that when you talk about a router you mean a cable router you don't
need to use internet sharing. There should be a port on the router labelled
'WAN' to connect to the cable modem. Depending on your ISP, you will have
to register only the MAC address of one of the NICs installed on one of the
comps which is attached to your network if your router supports MAC address
cloning. However you will have to follow the instructions which came with
your specific router to configure the router and the IP addresses on each
comp on the network.

I also suggest that before you disconnect the network cable from the comps
onboard NIC in order to attach it directly to the cable modem that you use
the following procedure (also to be used if you decide to hook any of the
comps individually directly to the cable modem - in this case MAC addresses
for all the comps will need to be registered with your ISP if this is
permitted):

1) Go to the START menu, select RUN and type 'cmd' to open the command box.
2) Type 'ipconfig /release' to release the connection.
3) Unplug the power from the cable modem.
4) Swap the network cables from/to the desired comp.
5) Plug the mains lead back in.
6) In the command window of the newly connected comp type 'ipconfig /renew'

All commands are without the quotation marks, note also that removing the
power from the modem is needed to reset the modem.

Hpe this helps

With a router (which is the best choice for LANs), Internet Connection
Sharing (ICS) is not necessary, and neither is a "host" computer. In
addition, only one NIC is required per computer. See
www.practicallynetworked.com for details.
