I have Windows XP Everytime I try to change something
in msconfig or something else, my internet won't work. I
have to go back and recheck the box and then reboot. I
will try to fix it and I get error messages. Here are
some of the error messages. 1. Network Connect Repair -
cannot clear arp cache 2. Internet Options at
Connections Setup it cannot locate online services 3.
IE has encountered a problem and will have to close.
After I unplug the modem and reboot and go through other
ridiculous things, all of a sudden I get the internet
back. But meanwhile I have over 23 items checked in my
msconfig because it won't allow me to uncheck even one
without my internet not working at all. And I can't go to
services.msc and get rid of anything there without having
the same problem. I have only had this computer since
Christmas and I have never had this kind of problem with
windows 98. I have called the Gateway tech and they
haven't a clue. Can anyone out there help me? Thanks.

Hi Patti,

Start here, especially with HijackThis and keep us posted.

Run Ad-Aware SE, Spybot and HijackThis:

Note: Update the first two programs, once installed, before running.

I ran these programs and HiJackThis had all kinds of
things that were wrong, but when I read the "to do" list,
I didn't know what to do. Am I to get rid of these files
and if so.....how? There was some spyware, so hopefully
that will help.

HijackThis is a great tool, but you need expert skill to use it
properly. Here are links to a tutorial and to places where you can post
your HJT log (not here, please). I highly recommend the AumHa forum.
