internet problems

i have a friend who has problems connecting to the net on his pc. it works
fine on my line as far as i can tell but on his either gives an error saying
could not open search page or after typing a site e.g. www.***.com it starts
looking for www.www.***.com.edu.org any ideas? his line is daxed which is
a split thing bt insist on doing but his older pc (win 98) seems fine. the
pc concerned is running xp pro. that doesn't sound very clear but you get
the idea. thanks.
