Internet problems with XP

We tried to upgrade our computer from Win 98 to XP. It wouldn't work, so we tried upgrading from 98 to 2000 to XP. That did work

Now, however, we can't log on to the internet from that computer. When we try, the connection screen moves very fast, and says "Unable to establish a connection.

Our ISP tried to walk us through fixing it, but they said something like XP doesn't recognize 98's modem drivers. Does anyone understand this? Is there any way I can fix this at home? I tried to get my computer back to 98, but conveniently, it won't allow me to. I'm beginning to regret bothering with XP. It listed some problems I may have, but no internet wasn't one of them!

You need to update your modem drivers. If you ran the
compatibility test before installing XP, Or do it now
(insert CD and select that option), it would have told
you what would need updated. [sounds like you did this
though]
Anyway, find out what modem you have (control panel>phone
and modem>modem tab - hightlight your modem > properties.
That should tell you the manufacturer. If it was supplied
with the computer, you can get the correct updated driver
from the computer manufacturers site (for example,
Gateway has all the updated drivers listed for your
computer as it was shipped). If no luck there, try the
modem manufacturers site. Be careful that you get the
right driver for your particular card or it may not work!!
Best of luck - stick with it (XP)

One more thing I just thought of. If you have a firewall
installed especially the free zonealarm, uninstall it.
When I went to upgrade from 98 (3 years ago)I had the
exact same problem with the internet!!
