Internet on startup

Why does Excel access the internet when it starts up? I blocked it in my
firewall and it works fine until I attempt to use the Excel import in
Quickbooks. I couldn't get the import to work until I unblocked Excel in my
firewall. I don't do anything in Excel that requires internet access so I'm
at a loss as to what it's doing.

Three thoughts:

1) It's a way for MSFT to run its Windows validation tool (but probably not)

2) Excel has a number of web services (stock quotes, etc.) which you may
have installed

3) Excel's help files often need to extract information from microsoft.com

I don't have any web services installed so it's probably #3. However, that
doesn't explain why it hangs my system when quickbooks tries to open it but
doesn't hang when I open it myself. Any thoughts?

Hi. You didn't mention what version you had. If 2007, you may want to
check this area out...

Office Button | Excel Options | Trust Center |

and on the right side..."Trust Center Settings..."

You'll see some internet related items there.
so it's probably #3.

If you think it is, you can experiment, and turn the on-line help feature
off (even in Excel 2003).
