Internet Explorer

I use MS Internet Explorer all of the time and my wife uses Netscape. If I save a website link to my desktop when using IE it changes to a Netscape shortcut.
Do I need to make IE my default, which I thought it was already. Is there a way to make it the default browser? I found the place in Netscape to make it the default but it does not provise an option to turn it off and I can't seem to find a place in IE to make it the default.
Need Help...............I hate Netscape!!!

Open IE. Got to Tools/Options/Programs. You will see a place to tick that
says "Internet Explorer should check to see if it is the default browser".
Tick it, tap on "apply", then "OK" and get out of IE. Try starting it again
and see if it asks you if you want IE to be your default browser.
