Internet Explorer won't connect to internet

Hello,

I'm using Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron 1000 with Sprint PCS Vision (Pantech
PC Card). Device Manager and the software for the PC card both say that the
card is setup correctly. The software for the PC card also says that it is
connected to the internet. And when I go into Task Manager under the
Networking tab it is obviously functioning.

However, whenever I click on the IE icon to get on the internet it says "IE
cannot display the webpage." And then it lists the 3 possibilities you're
all familiar with: 1) You are not connected to the internet. 2) The
website is encountering problems. 3) There was a typing error in the
address. It's obviously not #2 or 3.

I don't understand why IE won't connect to the internet if my PC card is
setup properly and connected. I went under the Connections tab in Internet
Properties and the PC card is listed.

I don't know what else to do. Why can't I get on the internet? I've been
able to access the internet before on this computer. I tried using System
Restore and I restored it to an earlier date but I still can't connect.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks :)

Sheila

[X-post to IE General]

Please state your IE version and full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3).

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Is Automatic Updates enabled and, to the best of your knowledge, is the
machine fully patched at Windows Update?

Bear,

Both IE and XP are up to date. I run McAfee and it's up to date.

Tools > Internet Options > Connections tab > LAN Settings > check
"automatically detect settings"

Failing that, open a command prompt Start > Run type "cmd" <enter>

type "ping google.com"

See if you get a response....

Then type "ipconfig /all"

Right click in the window, choose "select all", hit the <enter> key to copy
results to the clipboard, then paste the results back here.

In most cases your IE has been compromised. Try the following to see which
ones work in order to diagnose the problem.

1 - Remove all Malware from your system -

2 - Go to Kelly's Corner and run the Enable IE registry commands

3 - Get a copy of Firefox to see if you can get to the Internet.

4 - Open a Command prompt to see if you can ping any websites.

Hi Sheila,

Have you tried flushing DNS ?.........see below for instructions.

All commands must be entered without quotes.
Goto Start | Run | type "cmd" | type "ipconfig /flushdns"

When done try pinging google.com from command prompt.

If the above doesn't work, you might wanna consider
uninstalling/reinstalling your network card.

I had the exact same problem and this solved it for me.
