Internet Explorer Not Loading after Security Updates

I recently downloaded Microsoft CRITICAL Security updates
and an Internet update to my home PC using Windows 98 and
have not been able to use the internet since. Getting a
message that I.E. needs an error report run to fix the
problem. What can I do to correct the problem?

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.
