Internet Explorer - Multiple iexplore.exe in Task Manager

After using Internet Explorer with XP Home and having
exited the program I am often left with multiple
instances of iexplore.exe still running in Task Manager.
My virus scanner doesn't pick up any virus or anything.
Can anyone suggest a possible explanation?
 
Do they show on the taskbar? Might just be windows off-screen.
