Internet explorer lags

I used to have internet explorer 5.5, but everytime i try
to search, or press the button tab to go from one textbox
to the next, the internet explorer browser freezes for
like a minute, which gets very frustrating because it does
that for every search. And I keep getting this casino pop
up everytime i turn on my computer, even when internet
explorer wasnt even turned on yet. I have a p3, 700
megahertz computer. And when i upgraded to internet
explorer 6, it had the same problem. If anyone can help
that would be great, thx
