Internet explorer has lost its dynamic visuals - straight html...?

Personally I am only a traditional designer and I have very little web
knowledge [sorry], and I can't seem to trouble-shoot my problem, especially
on a Japanese OS Windows XP.

I recently found a lot of cookies that my computer had acquired and could
not delete them. I subsequently downloaded "cookie cruncher" for the
specifics of deleting all the rubbish my co-workers have accumulated. When
After I uninstalled the C/K program, my internet explorer has lost
function...? I realize this is perhaps trivial yet I need this for research
and my job and I can't afford to have an independant IT person to look at my
computer as it's in Japan - expensive.

I have tried to activate Java or install explorer pack 2 from the W/site,
yet all I can view is what appears to be straight old html sites. There is no
animation and even my yahoo email has no colour or backgrounds...

Is it possible to have some suggestions as to what I silly thing I have done
to my poor PC.

If you have some advice from a Japanese O/S point of view it would be nice.
Thanks

Thanks Frank for replying.

In terms of my lost function, the I/Explorer stills works as it does - I can
search, use the internet, yet it has only basic visuals. There are no is no
colour to my back grounds, there are no animations, there is nothing when I
view sites. There is only a white B/G and standard text with a little
animated gif, practically where the intrenet was 7 years ago.

When I search for something like a really fancy web page, I/Explorer used to
show very dynamic pages with lots of content and visuals that were perhaps
java based or flash based. So when I go to an architectural site, instead
getting a really great and well designed w/page, instead all I get is a white
B/G with standard text and an animated gif...its driving me crazy.

I have to use the web for research and I need to see the web pages in all
their content. Not just a scary 7 year old version of what it would have been
like.

I tried to install the microsoft service pack 2 yet not all the recipient
packs downloaded - some of the Java...? It did not work.

Yes I feel pretty stupid as I know it could be something so silly, yet the
kanji is difficult to read and I dont have a synapted clue as to what is
wronge.

If you have a suggestion or need more info, please ask.

I did the test run for the applets and there is no display for both 1 or 1.1 , which I assume signifies that my browser function has either been deleted or perhaps turned off...[?] in terms of the Java/applets. That is assuming that this is the overall problem? Can you assume how I might be able to trouble shoot my way through the problem. I mean would I have to go through some kind of security area and make some changes...?

Download and install the latest Java version from here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/download_the_latest.jsp

As for your original post about having plain-looking web sites come up, in
addition to the Java -
In IE go to Tools...Internet Options...General tab, Accessibility button and
make sure everything is unchecked there, click Okay. Then on the Advanced
tab, scroll down to the Multimedia section and make sure everything you want
is checked there, click Apply, Okay.

Thanks to both Jon and Frank,

Well After all the above I have been unable to change the plain looking web
sites that appear in my browser. It does not seem to be within the settings
as I have been through those "yes...in its entire beautiful [Kanji] splendor"
- VERY difficult. By the way, Kanji are the written Japanese characters I
have to read to comprehend all the computer speak into my native
language...GREAT, sigh!

All in all, I have decided to uninstall IE and re-install it again. If
nothing changes then I can assume its perhaps more serious then some simple
setting changes within IE proper.

Thanks to all who helped, it was VERY much appreciated...and after which I
will strangle my Business partner for her help in creating this matter.("V")
