Internet Explorer closes down on specific search

Hi, When I search for the word "Sponsorship", either on Google or via a
search field in a website, Internet Explorer closes down. I have contacted
Symantec Technician and after a test, he told me it wasn't Norton related.
Can any one help me?

Hello,

Try running IE6 with add-ons disabled

Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Advanced (tab) > UNCHECK "Enable
third-party browser extensions" > OK

If it works now, one of your add-ons is causing the problem. Start Internet
Explorer as normal, Tools, Manage Add-ons, Enable or Disable Add-ons.

Disable all the add-ons. Enable third-party browser extensions in Internet
Options.

Restart your browser and enable the add-ons one by one till the problem
appears and you get the culprit.

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

1... First, try to clean up your caches, Internet files and delete cookies
by doing this:
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Taps:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
Then click on Programs Tab and click Manage Add-Ons and Disable all non
Verified Add-Ons (You should Renable them later one-by-one and see the
culprit and update it or remove it.
For Malwares download both these software:

If you're going to keep recommending jumping into hijackthis usage, you
should at least provide this link to the author's introduction to it and a
few simple recommendations:
http://www.tomcoyote.org/hijackthis/
It will inform the poster of a lot of things they should have rather than
just downloading and running the program.

It's currently at Beta version 2.00. Also, hijackthis, as detailed a report
as it issues, should really only be used AFTER one has exhausted the normal
methods of clearing off malware. You and a couple others are beginning to
recommend it so often I'm imagining a lot of people posting useless or
non-relevant logs and wasting a lot of people's time when all they needed
was a quick malware scan by a free software app or three.
IMO (and you're certainly welcome to your own) your boilerplate, though
it appears accurate, is lacking in the real world information that should
accompany your posts.

Never assume, d00d! Just about every link I post has information on
HijackThis, including where to get it, and how & when to use it (i.e.,
*after* doing preliminary cleaning with utilities such as Ad-Aware).

Very few of the most respected forums are using Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0
beta (which is itself already outdated). Save yourself some time (and save
the volunteer experts time) by using HijackThis v1.99.1.

Mmm, that 2 info is from their web site today. As for my using hjt,, I have
never used it for posting; only personal logs for study. And you also
neglected to mention the exact info I said you did. If you find what I said
to be offensive, as evidenced by your response, then don't read it. I calls
'em as I sees 'em and you posted a plethora of stuff without any good
indication of where to start. So my comments stands as far as I'm
concerned.
When you can't be rational, don't rationalize instead; it doesn't become
you.

Hi Nass,
Thank you for your suggestions. I have tried them, but unfortunately I
still have the same problem. Have you experienced that problem yourself?
Have you typed the word "Sponsorship" in a search field and had IE close
down? Because of the word "Sponsorship" I can't help thinking that it is
Security Settings related. Of course if it is, I should come across other
words causing the same incident. But so far nothing.

Hi!

I tried what you suggested but it did not resolve my problem. UNCHECKING
"Enable third-party browser extensions" changed nothing. I did however
continued following your instructions by disabling all Add-ons, and then
tried a search with that same word "sponsorship", and got the same results:
browser closed down. So I have put everything back as it were. I have been
given other suggestions that I will now try. Thank you none-the-less )

Try to Copy the Entry there on a Notepad and save as Text or doc on your
Desktop.
Delete the search hooks there.
Have a look in the Add and Remove Control panel and see if there a
seachwebpage program installed and uninstall it, it may be installed by a
third-party app.
