After you have scanned for spyware....
To disable third-party browser component:
- Open Internet Explorer
- Clear the checkbox for "Enable third-party browser extensions
(requires restart)" found in Tools > Internet Options > Advanced
- Restart
If this works, then you can proceed to delete the one(s) causing the
problem:
- Run Regedit
- Entries for browser extensions will be found in the below key.
Export and delete the suspect ones.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Extensions

How you can scan for spyware deserves a little amplification, based on your
question. So see for instance "How to Protect Your Computer from Spyware and
Adware" at
http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/expertzone/columns/honeycutt/spyware.asp.
While this article is in an XP area, the basics still apply, and the article
has links to several other worthwhile resources, such as spyware removal
tools. Then there's "Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites" at
<<http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm>>

Let us know how you make out with this.
