Internet Explorer 6 closes when accessing hyperlink

I've had continuing problems with the Internet for about a year. For quite
awhile I could not search using Yahoo, but Google and others would work.
(Yahoo would load, the links on its page would work, but not the search
engine itself) This has stopped, Yahoo works, but hitting certain
hyperlinks will crash IE OR Mozilla. Also happens if I initially use
Google to search with. I notice it most in Yahoo Games- any game link will
crash it. But it happens with others (one example I remember was on the
AidsWalk site if I was on alternate pages and hit "Home").

I have AVG, it runs daily. I run Ad Aware a couple times a month. (neither
has ever found anything)
I clean out the Temp. Int. Files on average weekly . Have tried CW
Shredder, Stinger, a Qhost fix and an IE "cleaner" the name of which I
forget, but it was freeware linked from AumHa.

I know there is a file in my Temp Internet Files called yahoo that I
cannot delete, and I first noticed it about the time that my problems
started. When I try to delete it, it used to say it was in use by another
program, now it says it cannot find the file. I've tried to delete it in
safe mode and with system restore shut off. No luck. I've stumped my IT
guy at work with this one, too!
I guess the next step is Hijack this, but I thought I'd ask here in case
it's some otherwise fixable recognizable thing.

I run Windows XP, Version 2002,I just recently installed the service Pack
2, Intel Pentium III.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Hi,
Well, it sounds like a malware issue, but first try this:
1. Delete the History and TIF folders.
See: http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm
2. Remove objects from Yahoo in Downloaded Program Files- Internet Options>
General> TIF> Settings> View Objects. Set the View to Details and remove any
objects marked as damaged.
3. Try a reload of the scripting engine. Go to
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp
for the appropriate download.
4. Try opening a Cmd window (or from Start> Run) enter
ipconfig /flushdns
[Enter]
5. Try disabling any other program that might be causing this- ad-blockers,
privacy/security programs, etc
6. Something at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;870700
or http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#dns may help.
7. Go to http://forum.aumha.org/viewtopic.php?t=4075 Work through the
preliminary steps, then post a HijackThis log. Be patient they're busy.

HTH,
Don
