internet explorer 6 changes file extension on download

Man what a pain, this is a new computer running XP home SP2, IE 6
version 6.0.2900.2180 and every time I go to download an .mp3 file it
renames it to .mpeg. I've checked folder options and it seems to be
correct (opens with winamp). is there a registery edit i can run to
fix this. i searched microsoft's website and couldn't find anything.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

mp3 files are mpegs....specifically mpeg layer 3. just rename them if you
want, but since they are working correctly, why bother?
 
I rename each time I download but I really don't want to keep them as
..mpeg files. Does anyone have any solutions? I've tried messing
around with regedit but nothing has worked.
