Internet disconnects

When I connect on the internet, everything works 100 % until at a stage where
the internet gets slower and slower and after a while I cannot open a webpage
at all. When I look at the properties, I can see that "Sent" is still
active, but "Received" is not getting any bytes at all. When I disconnect
and connect on the internet again, everything is fine again until later when
the whole process starts again. Sometimes the internet drops the line
automatically whereby I must connect again. Mweb says their line is 100 %,
not their problem. I am using Windows XP Professional with IE 6, SP2.
Please help!

Well some questions first.

What kind of Internet Connection are you using?

Are you running any file sharing programs?

If your question is worth asking, it's worth posting.

If it’s not worth posting you should have done a search on

I have a 64 Kbps ISDN line. Not sure about file sharing programs, but one
that I know of is "LimeWire 4.10.0" installed on my pc.

Try your Internet connection without lime wire running in the background.

Here is a list of the File sharing programs I know of.

eDonkey 2000

eMule

Kazaa

Kazaa Lite

BitTorrent (including all of it's variants)

Lime Wire

Bear Share

Grokster

Napster

Now here is a list of programs that either still are nasty or were, but
I haven't found out about them changing yet. I have also included
several software firewalls that I've had a ton of problems with when I
did Tech support for Microsoft. (Remember PC-cillin is both an
anti-virus product & firewall all rolled into one package, which is why
I included it.)

"7FaSST, AdBreak, AIMSTER, alexa, Aornum, At Guard, Attune, AudioGalaxy,

sure about there version), Net2Phone, Netgo, NetPal, Netsonic, Network

Also these articles can be used to help troubleshoot this kind of
problem as it might be cause by something running in the background.
This means if the online virus scan didn't find any viruses (remember
your antivirus software is the first thing most viruses attack now) &
both Ad-aware & Spybot Search & Destroy didn't find any critical
components you should do the clean boot troubleshooting to see if it is
another piece of software.

One more thing if you do use msconfig you may want to check out the
following site as they list a ton of stuff that shows up on the startup
tab of msconfig.

Amanda,

I really don't want to sound condescending, but if you don't
know what software is installed on your computer, then some
people here will consider this a lost cause.

I can think of many possible causes for your computer's behavior
you describe, such as:

* Throttling by your ISP
* A firmware defect in your router, if you have one
* A hardware or driver flaw in the Ethernet or wireless adapter,
perhaps one that was too cheap
* A virus, worm, remote control malware, spam malware, etc.

And some more.

You may have to do some experimentation to find where the defect
lies. And you may have to describe your Internet connection
setup in some detail.
