Internet Connection

Hi,
I'm using a new machine I bought this week after my old one failed (five
years old and not worth spending money on), so I'm not really a willing
Vista user. I have an issue where my ISP address keeps being changed to an
invalid one. It should be 82. etc, it keeps changing to 10. etc so I have
only sporadic internet access. This problem never occurred on my old machine
using XP Pro. Doe's anyone know if this is a Vista problem?
Regards,
Alan.

There's no such thing as an ISP address - except to the Post Office. You're
looking for an IP address. It sounds like you may have some sort of router
issue or DHCP issues on your server. If it were your own network cable, the
default would go to 168.x.x.x, I think.

Are you using a wireless network or wired network to your router? Do you
even have a router? What type of Internet service do you have?

As you may have gathered I'm no expert on these things. I'm in the UK using
NTL, no wireless connections, just the same as I used on the last machine
which worked without any problems for years. I don't know if the new
(Packard Bell) machine is the problem, Vista or the IP or whatever. The hard
drive on the new machine never stops, it buzzes constantly even when nothing
at all is being done on it. I wonder if Vista has been put on a machine
which is not ready for it. All I really know is that I have just paid a lot
of money for a system that does not work very well.
Any advice welcome,
Regards,
Alan.
PS this reply has taken three reboots to get an internet connection.

If you do the repair/diagnose does it eventually give a connection, or if you
do the renew ip address does it eventually give a connection, I had a similar
issue and had to disable the tcpip v6 on the connection settings in order to
get it to work.

Thanks for that but I've now found out that it was the NTL server which was
causing the problem, it's now been fixed,

Alan.
