Internet Connection Sharing.

I have a network consisting of a router plus 4 workstations all
running Win2K all using DHCP. An adsl modem is attached to the router.

In order to share my internet connection from a workstation to my
PocketPC via a Bluetooth adaptor, I have to set up Internet Connection
Sharing on that workstation. Apparently, this necessitates not only
setting up a static IP but that the IP can only be 192.168.0.1
(previously used by the router)

Annoying but ... I set the router to use 192.168.0.5 and the router
pool to use 192.168.0.6 and above (in case I want some more static
IP's later) and rebooted the Router and all machines. The network is
functioning correctly.

However, when I try to turn on Internet Connection Sharing, it still
insists that 192.168.0.1 is in use elsewhere (it isn't). If I
mavnually set the workstation to a static IP of 192.168.0.1 and reboot
it functions fine within the network (demonstrating that it *isn't* in
use elsewhere. Yet Internet Connection Sharing still insists that it's
being used and there fore won't turn on.

Any idea how I can fix this? Is it a "memory" thing where Windows
remembers that it was previously in use (by the router)? Is there a
way to make it forget?

Any help would be appreciated.

Try this. Not sure if it will work but it's simple. Flush
the DHCP table in the router, then turn it off. Turn off
all computers. Turn on the Internet Connection Sharing
computer FIRST. Then turn on the router, then the other
computers.

Thanks, Jim. I can't find a way, in my router (Netgear RT-314) to
flush the dhcp table. Nothing obvious in the menus when you telnet
into it. I'll see if I can locate a manual.

I did try switching off the router then booting the workstation first
but it didn't do anything. Other than that somewhere in there it lost
the default gateways setting (the router ip) ... perhaps because it
couldn't find the router.

Order may be important here. Set your network setting
back to the way it was...to automatically get an IP
address so that it gets it from the DHCP device. Reboot
your machine (or renew the address). THEN turn on ICS.
ICS with change the address for you. See if you can get
this far.

That's exactly where I started from actually. When ICS tries to change
the address (to 192.168.0.1) it says it's already in use somewhere.

However, since, with this much screwing aroundit's easy to overlook
something, I'll do as you suggest and go back to square one and try
again.

Follow up: I just tried again ... set everything back to dhcp. Router
is set for 192.168.0.5 Router pool starts at 192.168.0.6. One other
static ip device (print-server at 192.168.0.100).

ICS says it will set the workstation to static ip 192.168.0.1 but then
says it can't do it because the ip is already in use.

The really frustrating thing is that if I connect the PocketPC via its
sync cable using the active-sync software, I can connect to the
LAN/internet through the workstation without invoking ICS at all. It's
just the Bluetooth software that insists on doing it that way.
