Internet Connection Sharing - need help

Hello
I am new to networking and am having a couple of problems.
I have a desktop and laptop both using wireless cards and a Netgear wireless
router/broadband unit. The network works great both computers seeing each
other and sharing drives/printers etc. (both computers running windows xp
home)
My problems come when i try to share my dial-up internet connection (have
not got broadband yet).
I set the desktop dial-up to allow other users on the network to access the
internet
and check the box that says 'Establish a dal up connection whenever a
computer on my network attempts to access the internet'.
If i am connected to the internet on the desktop the laptop can also connect
to the internet, but if the desktp is not connected then the laptop can't
connect. So what does the 'Establish a dal up connection whenever a computer
on my network attempts to access the internet'. do??
Another issue is when i select share the internet connection on my dial-up
then i can no longer see the other computer on the network and get a Windows
error message. The only way i can get the network back is to dissable
internet sharing.

Can anyone throw any light on this and explain (as simply as possible) what
i am doing wrong.

Thanks in advance
Colin

Configure the Netgear router as a wireless access point only,
bypassing its routing capabilities:

1. Access the router's built-in web server from one of the computers.
For a Netgear router, the address is usually http://192.168.0.1 .

2. Disable the router's built-in DHCP server. The computer with the
dial-up connection will act as the network's DHCP server.

3. Change the router's LAN IP address to 192.168.0.254 to be
compatible with Internet Connection Sharing.

4. Unplug the router, wait a few seconds, and then plug it back in.

5. Reboot both computers.

I've had trouble getting this configuration to work with some Netgear
routers. If the second computer is unable to get an IP address,
configure its TCP/IP properties manually:

IP Address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1

I need help too, but I'm wondering if I'm in the right place to ask a
question.

Hi, Terry. You're probably in the right newsgroup (and if you're not,
we'll direct you to the right one), but you're in the wrong place -
you're in the middle of someone else's thread. This is called
"hijacking" and isn't a good idea. Start a new post with your problem.
Be sure to include all pertinent details and there are lots of people
here who want to help you.
